Photography

In my adult years, I have been good about taking pictures of moments that represent my life. I think that I get this from my parents as they have always been good about taking pictures in order to capture the important moments in our lives.

But the exciting and enjoyable idea of Photography is something that I’ve recently discovered. A couple of years ago, I started taking pictures of subjects in order to better document important places, events, etc. in my life, and in the beginning, I was taking a lot of pictures. For example, I would spend entire days (over a long period of time) walking around neighborhoods in NYC taking pictures of significant things, places, situations, and images (past and present) that have certain meaning and importance for me. After a short time, I realized that I was capturing some really striking and interesting images, and at that point, I began to think of what I was doing as Photography instead of capturing a life lived; I started thinking of the process as a creative outlet, an exploration, and a craft. Now, I work at it through trial and error; I take several shots of one image to ensure that I’m capturing what I want in the right way, and I’m training my eye to see composition and creative ways of capturing what I’m interested in. I’ve improved, but I still do not know everything about Photography.  But like art, I do not want to take lessons or seek formal training because picture taking has evolved, in a short amount of time, into a very important and personal experience that I want to explore on my own; I want to improve and grow as a result of my own experience and practice. Presently, my subject matter is varied, and I’ve probably taken thousands of pictures. I have not yet begun to evaluate the work completed or prepare my Photography, but I do hope to in the near future.
I think of my Photography as an extension of my art. As a result, I have many images and ideas that I would like to paint or create, but I don’t always have the time to create art as a result of other responsibilities; however, taking a photo is immediate, and that provides me with an opportunity to quickly capture what I am thinking, feeling, seeing, and imagining.
